The Lean Mining Program aims to demonstrate low capital costs technologies that will accelerate underground tunnel development, accelerate the movement of rock in underground mining environments and also technologies that will reduce the total energy required to extract ore. The program will focus on technologies that apply to advancing underground mining.
Increase the total underground mining net present value and reduce the overall underground mining energy balance. Utilize continuous improvement techniques to achieve step change. Project outcomes will achieve 200-300% gains in mining intensity. Overcome the challenges of mining in extreme underground conditions.
The Lean Mining Program will be a business led initiative that advances select projects utilizing a network structure (mining companies, SMEs, academic institutions, government, others). The program will accelerate the commercialization of technologies through targeted demonstration projects that will engage and recruit relevant stakeholders and customers.
The technologies being considered for this program will include the following:
- Improve transport of underground rock
- Reduce energy associated with moving rock
- Reduce hoisting of waste-rock
- Improve the quality of hoisted rock
- Reduce the energy associated with breaking rock
- Extract value from underground mining data

TECHNOLOGY READINESS LEVEL (TRL):
Although the various technologies are at various stages of development, the majority are within the higher TRL 4-5, whereby there is readiness to integrate the parts into working prototypes that are ready for scaled demonstration.
HOW TO GET INVOLVED:
The program is currently seeking seed funding and support from the public sector (government) and plans to leverage these investment with private sector contributions.
