John Van Ham
Executive Director for Sector Alignment & Business Relations at InnoTech Alberta
John Van Ham is responsible for fostering relationships and alignment with others in the innovation ecosystem, including priority clientele, industry associations, technology consortia, and public and private sector organizations in the research and tech development space (provincial and national). The group also works with public sector investment and granting programs, to align InnoTech’s research capacity and capabilities (facilities, equipment and people) with provincial R&D needs. John has worked extensively in the private and public sectors. Most recently at Alberta Innovates, as Executive Director in Clean Resources, focused on investment funding for R&D in environmental innovation. Prior to InnoTech & Alberta Innovates, John spent much of his career in the natural resource sectors, working for industry (ConocoPhillips and Geomaque Exploration), not-for-profit organizations (International Institute for Sustainable Development), government agencies, and several start-up companies/organizations in oil & gas, renewables, clean-tech, mining and agriculture.
John has a track record as a driven and resourceful leader in the natural resource and clean tech sectors, with a passion for innovation and strategy to create business and product sustainability. Assets include deep expertise in corporate strategy and business planning, combined with extensive operational and field experience. This background enables a core strength in leading organizations through complex external environments, to achieve knowledge-based or technical solutions that deliver economic value, environmental stewardship, and social progress.
John has a Master of Environmental Design Degree (MEDes) and a Bachelor of Science Degree (BSc) – double major in Geology and Geophysics – both from the University of Calgary. John lives in Calgary with his wife and family, and enjoys all activities related to food, travel and the great outdoors.
