Overcoming Barriers to Innovation
How we Operate
We believe that mining innovation helps the industry achieve significant improvements in the performance of mine operations. However, we know there are crucial barriers that impact the development and adoption of new technologies, techniques, processes and products.
CEMI’s Innovation Process is designed to overcome these two key impediments: Innovation Gap, Commercialization Gap.
CEMI’s Innovation Approach: Closing the Gaps
Measure of Success
A key measure of success for a mining innovation is that it bridges both gaps–innovation and commercialization. Only with the delivery of a viable market-ready product or service, is innovation successful.
CEMI achieves this by cutting across both gaps through the:
- Development of Technical Innovations: Through the work of our areas of technical focus – ore discovery (FindMine), addressing heat & rock stress in deep mines (DeepMine), improving mine productivity & operational performance (ValueMine), environmental impact and improving sustainability (SustainMine), CEMI helps to overcome the technical obstacles of the innovation gap. Our broad scale knowledge and understanding of the mining industry helps us navigate the development of the technical innovations, from research (basic & applied), to trials to validate process and production.
- Facilitating Commercialization of Mining Innovation: CEMI’s technical know-how and understanding of operational realities of the mining industry helps address commercial viability (BizMine) of innovation within the day-to-day mining operations and market adoption.
Innovation at CEMI: A Rigorous Process
Our approach to innovation is disciplined, focused and purposeful.
Building on the elements of CEMI’s Innovation Equation and by systematically adhering to our Innovation Process to bridge existing gaps, we ensure that mining innovations are sustainable and economically feasible for the industry today and tomorrow.
