TORONTO / SUDBURY, ON (November 3, 2026) — The Critical Minerals Institute (CMI), a global think tank and central hub for the critical minerals ecosystem, has announced that Douglas Morrison, President and CEO of the Centre for Excellence in Mining Innovation (CEMI), has joined its Board of Directors.

As reported by InvestorNews, the appointment strengthens CMI's technical and operational expertise as the institute continues to connect companies, capital markets, and policymakers across the international critical minerals landscape.

Advancing Innovation, Productivity, and Global Competitiveness

With over four decades of international mining leadership, Douglas Morrison brings deep domain knowledge spanning underground rock mechanics, strategic mine design, and commercialization of next-generation mining technologies.

“Douglas is a visionary who understands that the future of our mining industry depends on our ability to develop and adopt competitive technologies,” said Tracy Hughes, Executive Director and Co-Founder of CMI. “His recognition that innovation must translate into greater productivity, lower costs and stronger global competitiveness is precisely the leadership our industry needs. We are delighted to welcome him to the CMI Board of Directors.”

Morrison has served as President and CEO of CEMI since 2012. His career includes 15 years in the deep nickel mines of Ontario's Sudbury Basin, where he was Superintendent of Rock Mechanics and Mine Design at Inco (now Vale), followed by 15 years with Golder Associates, advising mines globally and serving as Golder's Global Mining Sector Leader from 2005 to 2010. In 2014, he also led the $35-million Ultra-deep Mining Network, advancing practical solutions for bulk mining below depths of 2.5 kilometres.

Strengthening Strategic Bridges for CEMI and MICA

This board appointment builds upon the foundation established through the Associate Partnership Agreement signed between CEMI and the Critical Minerals Institute in September 2025. It further aligns Canadian innovators and SMEs—including members of the Mining Innovation Commercialization Accelerator (MICA) Network—with international capital markets, industrial supply chains, and policy initiatives.

Through CMI's global platform, including its monthly Masterclasses, research publications, and the annual Critical Minerals Institute Summit, CEMI and MICA will continue working to accelerate the deployment of Canadian technologies essential to the global energy transition.
