S.U.M.I.T. deep mining program launches online Journal at CEMI’s 10 Year AGM Celebration

Sudbury, ON (September 27, 2017) – CEMI (Centre for Excellence in Mining Innovation) celebrates a 10-year anniversary of delivering mining innovations at its Annual General Meeting (AGM) by launching the SUMIT Program Journal authored by researchers and students, a rich partnership of academic and industry research teams delivering industry value results. The SUMIT Program Journal is jointly distributed by the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM) & CEMI and is available online for free at www.cim.org and www.cemi.ca/SUMIT/.

SUMIT – Smart Underground Monitoring & Integrated Technologies for deep mines, a $6.7 million program, was managed by CEMI and led by Laurentian University, in partnership with Queen’s University and the University of Toronto, and with contributions from the University of Waterloo, University of Alberta, University of British Columbia and Carleton University. The SUMIT Journal details the results and outcomes of the six-year research collaborations aimed at developing and advancing smart engineering techniques, technologies and tools to facilitate step-change advances in productivity, efficiency and energy optimization in underground mining at depth. Supported by Vale, Sudbury Integrated Nickel Operations – A Glencore Company, Rio Tinto, and the Ontario Government.

Douglas Morrison, President & CEO, CEMI remarked, “By utilizing collaborative programs such as SUMIT, the Canadian & global mining sector will continue to find innovative ways to reduce risk, accelerate mine development, improve production capacity, and reduce energy consumption.”

CEMI’s AGM hosted a packed house highlighting CEMI’s results and dedication to delivering technical solutions to the mining industry through innovation and commercialization. Members from the Ultra Deep Mining Network (UDMN): Maestro Digital Mine, Jannatec Technologies and Electrale Innovation/MIRARCO presented their commercially viable projects and how they are implementing their technologies into the mining industry. CEMI coordinated a dynamic SME-led Innovator Panel: What it takes to be a successful Innovator in Mining! The panel explored what it takes to get their innovative ideas adopted by the mining industry. Gained valuable insights into how SMEs have identified the needs of the mining industry and how they are delivering solutions. Moderated by Dick Destefano, Executive Director, SAMSSA, panelists included: Walter Siggelkow, Founder and President, Hard-Line; Michael Gribbons, Vice President of Sales and Marketing, Maestro Digital Mine; Christine Haas, President, Renix; and Chris Novak, CEO and Owner, Centric Mining Systems.

At 10 years and counting, CEMI’s objective is to help solve the mining industry’s challenges by helping to sustain existing mines, to enable the development of new mines and improve the safety and environmental performance of the mining industry. For President & CEO, Douglas Morrison, “CEMI’s current approach to innovation is best described as Targeted Innovation. Our internal expertise and industry collaborators target a particular industry problem and we bring together and integrate the team that we think can develop a commercially viable solution in Canada and beyond. We look forward to the next 10 years!”
